Piperine (or Piperaceae) is the active compound in black pepper. Piperine is used for its ability to inhibit phase 2 detoxifying enzymes and to prevent the process of glucuronidation. It has the chemical formula ‎C17H19NO3 and a molecular weight of 285.343 g/mol.

Piperine Benefits and Uses

Piperine has the ability to significantly improve the absorption and uptake of many dietary supplements. It has significant and profound effects on metabolic enzymes in the liver and intestine.

It may induce alterations in membrane dynamics and permeation characteristics, along with an increase in absorptive surface area in the small intestine. This supplement affects the P-glycoprotein-mediated efflux system, via modulation of functional activities and gene expression of P-Glycoprotein. Some research has pointed to a dose-dependent increase in gastric acid secretion and a delay in gastrointestinal motility.

Piperine is known by a number of alternative names, including:

  • (2E,4E)-5-(2H-1,3-Benzodioxol-5-yl)-1-(piperidin-1-yl)penta-2,4-dien-1-one
  • Piperoylpiperidine
  • Bioperine
  • Black Pepper extract
  • Extrait de Poivre
  • Grain de Poivre
  • Piper nigrum
  • Piperaceae
  • Peppercorn extract

Scientific Consensus

Piperine the active compound in black pepper. It is used especially for its ability to down regulate or inhibit phase II detoxification enzymes and prevent the glucuronidation process in the liver. It allows certain supplements (especially water-soluble supplements that are metabolized by your liver) to be better absorbed.

When taken at the recommended serving size, Piperine is considered likely safe for use by most people. However, it is extremely important to note that Piperine interacts with almost every medication imaginable – especially medicines metabolised in the liver.

Warning: There is not enough research about the safety of Piperine for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Do not use this supplement if you have any underlying medical conditions.

Special Warning: DO NOT TAKE PIPERINE SUPPLEMENTS IF YOU ARE TAKING ANY MEDICATION. If you are taking any medication, it is very important that you first speak to your doctor before using this supplement.

Piperine may also affect the metabolism of other dietary supplements, and it is recommended to using lower-than-usual servings if using other supplements in combination with Piperine.

Piperine Powder

High quality piperine. I use to to make my curcumin work better. It is much more cost effective if you use this instead of the name brand bioperine, and then you can buy the cheap curcumin.

Serving size is 10 mg. As a dietary supplement, take 1-4 servings up to 3 times per day (optimally, 1 hour prior to taking other dietary supplements). Please start with the lowest suggested single serving quantity to assess response.
