5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally-occurring amino acid, found in high concentrations in the Griffonia Simplicifolia plant. It is the chemical precursor to serotonin (5-HT). It has the chemical formula C11H12N2O3 and a molecular mass of 220.228 g/mol.

5-HTP Benefits and Uses

Serotonin is a vital neurotransmitter and hormone with important functions in the human body. It is involved in the biosynthesis of both serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan. Anecdotally, 5-HTP may have similar effects to other mood-lifting supplements. Some people consider it a natural serotonin supplement because of its similarity to the neurotransmitter serotonin.

5-HTP is known by a number of alternative names, including:

Scientific Consensus

A number of studies have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of 5-HTP for its proposed benefits. Most studies have indicated positive results with few side effects. Nevertheless, further research is needed to fully understand the significance of the benefits and adverse effects of this supplement, especially for long term use.

There is not enough research about the safety of 5-HTP for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Warning: 5-HTP may interact with a number of medications, including SSRI medication and other medicines that affect the serotonergic system. Do not take 5-HTP if you are using medication.

I was using tryptophan before , but this 5-htp is more reliable for helping on nights I have trouble sleeping. I use 2 scoops ( the scoop is tiny) so its also economical.
